Leading for innovation

Why are some organizations able to innovate time and again, while others hardly innovate at all? This Harvard Business school research explores how leaders can create an environment that fosters continuous learning and innovation in organisations.

Good leaders create an environment that supports people to be willing and able to try new things, to fail and to learn together. "While all [leaders in the study] were visionaries capable of creating a vision and inspiring others to pursue it, none considered this their primary role. Instead, they saw themselves as “social architects”, whose role was to shape the context. They created communities in which others were willing and able to innovate." The research stresses the role of community, social learning and co-creation: "Innovation is a 'team sport', in which individual effort becomes something more."
